Agriculture at La Habra High School offers students a hands-on approach to California's leading industry through classroom instruction, raising animals, gardening and other projects. The Academy of Agri-Science students must enroll in one or more Agriculture courses each year, be active participants in Future Farmers of America, and must complete a supervised agriculture experience (SAE). An SAE may be raising and showing animals, constructing an agriculture mechanics project, raising plants, or completing a science fair project.

Course Offerings

Introduction to California Agriculture is the beginning class which may be counted as Physical Science; students learn about animals and their surroundings.

Animal/Plant Science is the second year course which is considered a Life Science; students learn more about animals, plants, and their ecosystems.

Intro to Ornamental Horticulture

Veterinary Science/Ag. Biology is for college bound students; it is a more detailed, farm animal specific course meeting college requirements for a laboratory science.

Agricultural Economics meets the Economics requirement for seniors; it focuses on the business structure of California's leading industry.

Agriculture Mechanics is an introduction to wood construction, metal technology, welding, plumbing, electrical, concrete/masonry, and small engines in an agricultural application.

Small Gasoline Engines includes the operation and maintenance of small engines. This course is linked with Mt San Antonio College's Small Engine Technician program [2 + 2].

SPECIAL FEATURES

With both a school farm and an FFA [Future Farmers of America] chapter, students not only raise animals and plants and construct projects, they may also enter school projects in FFA competition. FFA is the largest youth organization in the world; it fosters an interest in agriculture and teaches leadership skills. La Habra FFA is one of the most nationally recognized chapters in this fine organization.

FACULTY

Home Economics is a very broad subject area which teaches personal, family, and work management skills, as well as providing a background for career exploration. At La Habra High School, five of the seven state-recognized Home Economics content areas are offered, some in beginning and advanced levels. The focus is on hands-on instruction and projects with practical applications to daily life. An additional component of the department is the curricular club, FHA-HERO [Future Homemakers of America-Home Economics Related Occupations]. Competition and leadership opportunities are available for any interested student.

Course Offerings

Foods 1 and Advanced Foods offer instruction in meal preparation and planning, safety and sanitation, nutrition and health, and food budgeting.

In Clothing 1 and Advanced Clothing, students learn about the construction, care and repair of clothing, careers in fashion design, and the wise use of wardrobe dollars.

Child Development teaches about the care and development of children from before birth through age five. Students practice child discipline and instruction by operating a Preschool for community children for nine weeks. Photos

Interior Design helps students consider how to make their homes a reflection of personal taste while incorporating the elements and principles of design. Practical skills dealing with budgeting for housing purchases and conserving resources are also taught.

Consumer Decisions is a class which helps students become informed, educated consumers. Financial planning, occupational goals, and consumer rights and responsibilities are important parts of this class.

SPECIAL FEATURES

FHA-HERO participation is an opportunity for students to compete in their areas of interest. Students may take part in the regional competitions, and then go on to state contests with a first, second, or third place win. In 99-00 we had a regional first place winner in Culinary Arts/Cake Decorating.

FACULTY

Industrial Technology supplies, for many students, a relevant bridge from school to real life -- practical lessons which can be put to immediate use. Students are given the opportunity to explore careers in an industrial field and chart a path to achieving employment in their area of interest.

Course Offerings

ROP Automotive Technician Training explores the basics of auto repair such as brakes, cooling, exhaust, and fuel systems.

Wood Technology allows students hands-on access to the tools of the construction and cabinet-making trades.

ROP Auto Detailing teaches students proper methods of waxing, upholstery cleaning, buffing, sanding, touch up painting, and engine detailing.

Metals Technology provides students with opportunities to increase their skills in sheet metal, machine work, foundry, welding, and ironwork.

SPECIAL FEATURES

The intent of each course is to supply problem-solving situations using projects of students' own design and choice. Any student, whether academically motivated or not, will benefit from this hands-on experience. Most of the classroom shops have state-of-the-art equipment and tools to demonstrate what is actually happening in industry.
