Home Economics and Technology Standards
FASHION DESIGN, MANUFACTURING, AND MERCHANDISING

The student will:
  • demonstrate use and care of equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • identify, compare, and analyze fibers, fabrics, and finishes.
  • recommend appropriate carte and production techniques for textiles and textile products.
  • apply the elements and principles of design in the fashion industry.
  • utilize these elements and principles when assisting clients in making textile and apparel selections.
  • identify fashion and merchandising trends and their importance to particular segments of the fashion market and relate merchandising trends to the image of target clients.
  • produce garments using home or industrial sewing machines, equipment, and related computer software.
  • identify ways in which garment construction skills can be used in a variety of occupations within the fashion design, manufacturing, and merchandising industries.
  • research historical trends in fashion and their relationship to changing economic, social, and cultural conditions.
  • demonstrate ways in which fashion has been influenced by historical events.
  • select fabrics, design and construct apparel, evaluate garment fit, make necessary alterations.
  • make necessary alterations according to acceptable standards.
  • identify tools needed for pattern making, draping, making markers, and grading patterns.
  • analyze and explain the skills and tools needed to create and develop textile designs.
  • investigate fashion forecasting resources and global and cultural trends.
  • explain and interpret the interdependence and importance of all jobs to the success of the organization.
  • describe the roles and responsibilities of management and employees.
  • explain the need for workers at all levels to act and dress appropriately.
  • demonstrate work-force management and team-building strategies.
  • explain work site policies concerning employer and employee rights and responsibilities, including strategies for handling harassment.
  • demonstrate positive work attitudes, self-confidence, honesty, perseverance, and self-discipline in workplace learning experiences.
