Home Economics and Technology Standards
INTERIOR DESIGN

The student will:
  • demonstrate care and use of equipment.
  • demonstrate knowledge of contracts and liability and apply appropriate professional and ethical practices.
  • locate sources and analyze characteristics of merchandise, including features, benefits, performance, finishes, materials, and textiles.
  • identify placement of interior systems (lighting, plumbing, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning).
  • develop scaled floor plans detailing furniture layouts and traffic patterns to meet the needs of clients.
  • apply principles and elements to the design and fabrication of residential and commercial furnishings.
  • demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to design, fabricate, and install window, wall, and floor treatments.
  • upholster furniture.
  • fabricate slipcovers.
  • develop scaled floor plans and elevations that include cabinetry, interior details, and interior systems.
  • create and explain the design concept and specify fabrics and furnishings accordingly.
  • recommend strategies for merchandising a design concept.
  • identify and select accessories for a specific residential and commercial room that demonstrate the ways in which to use design elements and principles to achieve an aesthetically pleasing environment.
  • collect and compare product information on given generic products.
  • use the information to complete a features-benefit performance sheet.
  • identify and interpret the liabilities and economic consequences associated with care and maintenance of residential and commercial interiors.
  • demonstrate procedures used to solve a variety of problems such as clogged plumbing, holes in walls, and defective lighting.
  • evaluate career options related to each CHE content area.
  • identify and practice skills transferable to specific career pathways.
  • explain and interpret the interdependence and importance of all jobs to the success of the organization.
  • describe the roles and responsibilities of management and employees.
  • explain the need for workers at all levels to act and dress appropriately.
  • demonstrate work-force management and team-building strategies.
  • demonstrate positive work attitudes, self-confidence, honesty, perseverance, and self-discipline in workplace learning experiences.
  • prepare an assessment portfolio to highlight job readiness or entry into a college or university program in a home economics career path cluster.
  • explain the role of transferable skills and identify personal skills that are transferable to career fields.
  • demonstrate the use of technology and analyze the changes occurring in work, personal, and family life as a result of technology.
  • develop and evaluate floor plans, space arrangements, and color schemes for living and working environments.
  • consider individual, family, or client resources in selecting home furnishings, accessories, and equipment in order to provide a functional, aesthetically pleasing living or working environment.
  • rank his/her own personal criteria as related to types of housing.
  • determine the type of housing matching his/her needs.
  • list the advantages and disadvantages of various types of housing.
  • select the best housing from a case study and justify his/her selection.
  • compare several pictures of decorated rooms and analyze these in terms of the principles and elements of design.
  • design a single wall elevation using at least two design elements and three design principles.
